Newspaper Gets Around Photography Ban At Football Event With Cartoon Illustrations

from the don't-mess-with-reporters dept

We've covered a few different recent stories of various sports leagues or professional sports teams trying to limit how journalists and photographers can report on their games, and have even covered cheeky attempts to get around such restrictions by having reporters cover events from home while watching on TV. Now, a whole bunch of you have been sending in variations on a story in the UK, where the Southampton football team apparently has decided to ban photojournalists from taking images of matches, instead telling newspapers they need to buy photos from the team's “official” photographer.

Thankfully, some of the newspapers covering the latest match felt that was ridiculous, and chose to respond in some rather creative ways. The Plymouth Herald, who was covering the visiting team, decided to employ someone to draw cartoons of key moments in the match, rather than using the official photographs:

Perhaps even more amusing? Some reports point out that The Sun covered the game by carefully making sure to never mention Southampton or any of its players. Well played.

171 Absolutely Abstract Wallpapers

What is abstract photography? We could debate the nuances of the definition all day—as many do. But it's so much more fun just to look at the mind-bending pictures from this week's Shooting Challenge, isn't it?

Before we move on, you can get the wallpapers here.

Lead Shot – Pierced Blue Triangle

Nikon D3000, 55-200mm lens, 100 ISO. I'm on a student exchange in Finland and my host family's house has a lot of weird angles in it so I tried to find some that looked abstract. I'm not very good at abstract photography, I was outside for like 10 hours trying to take abstract photographs but I couldn't get any good shots.
-Dustin Chan

Night Fight

Canon EOS 7D, 1/20, F/5.0, Canon 50mm 1/8 lens, ISO: 800. Well, we have an old English sheep dog who loves to go outside and roll around in the grass. As most of us know summer is flea season so we bought a flea killer to capture all the ones he brings inside the house. At night we leave it on when going to sleep and noticed the view from the top was pretty sweet.
-Dino Lie

Circlular Sphere

Nikon D5000, AF-S 18-105 VR, 1/30 s, 105 mm, f/16, ISO 200. It is a rotating ring. Neon lights in a room made ripple effect. I got the idea when my girlfriend was playing with her ring. I shot it first at a dinner to show my friend that I can make good photography in a bad light condition without his f/1.8 lens. I re-shot it On a white desk and more light. It turned out well enough to submit.
-Janez Kos

Chromatic Scale

Canon EOS 50D, Lens EF50 mm f/1.8 II, 1/500 sec, f/1.8, ISO 100. I first thought the “Abstract” theme was quite tricky. I was looking for some abstract building part outside all the time and could not find anything suitable. Then I bought a new camera to replace my old EOS 350D and started to do some tryout shots on our balcony. And suddenly I found my abstract motive. It is a wind chime.
-Maren Ko

Microcircuitry, It Is Not

Canon EOS Rebel XSi, EF-S 18-55mm Lens, f/5.6 at 1/100 ISO 400 focal length 34mm
This is a wet floor mat that I rolled slightly to provide the curvature. I tweaked saturation, temperature and exposure a little in iPhoto.
-Chris Thompson

Garage Spider

Canon 5D, Lens: 16-35 version II, ISO 400. This shot can be seen as hole of light, or a logo of spider man, may be the connection of the line will create the an explosion of light etc… In fact, this one is a parking in France.
-Ha Duy Long

Wet Space

Taken with a Canon PowerShot S90, 1/125 second and f/4.9, ISO 100. Contrast and saturation modified in Paint.NET. A sheen of oil on Puget Sound, half shaded by a pier. And on the right, a starscape with a couple of hemi-ringed dark planets.
-Brian Hall

Couch Array

Panasonic DMC-FZ30 on my tripod, ISO80, Exposure 1/10, F2.8. Well, I was wandering in my house after reading your article on the photo contest. I wanted something that was extremely detailed and yet very simple… after searching and taking many awful pictures, I sat in front of my television and powered it on. It was so simple, the solution was directly in my face. So yes, I took many macro pictures of the pixels of my television when it was on, I posterized it to see the pixel, boosted the colors and voila!
-Philippe Raymond

Green Lantern

Canon T2i, 50mm, f/1.8 iso 100. Finished my beer and took a pic of the sun through it. No post.
-Sam Marusich

Reach Out and Touch Someone

Canon EOS XTi, 50mm, 1/60 sec @ f20 ISO 100. This abstract is all about the lines and the negative space rather than the obscurity of the focal point. You must look past the idea of it being a photo of a telephone pole and see the shapes.
-Scott Alberts

WINNER – Hudsucker Proxy

Nikon D90 with 18-200 VRII, Insight Tech Gear HX200 flashlight, Manfrotto 7301YB, 200mm f/5.6, 500ms exposure, ISO400. The subject of this shot is the exhaust pipe on my car. I inverted the vertical tube on the tripod to hang the camera down below and lined it up directly with the exhaust outlet. I cleaned the tip quickly and wet it so that it would reflect light better. I used the flashlight (ridiculously bright) to illuminate the ground between the camera and the car so that the diffuse bounce wouldn't illuminate the car much, but the wet exhaust tip would reflect around the outer ring. I played with the exposure in manual mode to capture just the ring.
[Ed note: I love that, from one of mankind's most impressive, polished inventions—the automobile—we get one of the most basic yet fundamental shapes: the circle.]
-Ryan Powers

Awesome entries all around. And while many still claim not to understand the idea of abstract art—indeed, the concept itself is a bit abstract—I think that most of our entries delved boldly into the vast genre, albeit in different ways. Also, if you're still looking for a definition to make you happy with the term, I stumbled across this essay on abstract art that I found to be pretty fantastic. Of course, it may just tie even more knots in your brain. But that's sort of the fun of it, right?

This photo by narinnr from Kagoshima, Japan (the Naples of the East, says Wikipedia) captures a Ferris wheel built atop a shopping center next to the train station. How fun is that? Imagine if you could kill time between trains at Penn Station riding high above New York?! I'm partial to the Gravitron when choosing an amusement ride, although spinning around against centrifugal force is probably not so fun before a long train ride.

Even more interesting are the statues in front of the Ferris wheel, part of the Satuma students' monument, dedicated to 19 Japanese students smuggled into Britain in 1865 to learn Western technology. Imagine being the first in your country to study abroad and being responsible for the start of the industrial revolution. Kinda makes a semester abroad in Prague drinking as much beer as humanly possible seem a little weak.

Do you have a photo that will inspire many Google and Wikipedia searches? Or maybe an interesting monument or an unusually-located amusement ride in your travels? Upload it to Gadling's Flickr group and we might use it for a future Photo of the Day.
The first promotional photo of DIMMU BORGIR's “Abrahadabra” campaign has been released and features regalia created by Junker Designs' Tod Waters and Giuliana Mayo.

Waters and Mayo first began working with the band in early 2007, having created the clothing for DIMMU BORGIR's last album, “In Sorte Diaboli”.

DIMMU BORGIR's ninth album, “Abrahadabra” will be released in Germany on September 24, in the rest of Europe on September 27, and in North America on October 12 via Nuclear Blast Records.

The word “abrahadabra” (which roughly translates into “I will create as I speak”) first publicly appeared in Chapter III of “Liber AL vel Legis” (commonly referred to as “The Book of the Law”) written by Aleister Crowley in Cairo, Egypt in 1904.

“Abrahadabra” track listing:

01. Xibir (2:50)
02. Born Treacherous (5:02)
03. Gateways (5:10)
04. Chess With The Abyss (4:08)
05. Dimmu Borgir (5:35)
06. Ritualist (5:13)
07. The Demiurge Molecule (5:29)
08. A Jewel Traced Through Coal (5:16)
09. Renewal (4:11)
10. Endings And Continuations (5:58)

DIMMU BORGIR singer/songwriter Shagrath shares the following about the new album: “After eleven months of total focus, dedication and professional team work, Darkness has been reborn. Some people have expressed their concern about the future of the band since the departure of some members of the clan. Let me assure you that things happen for a reason. The black flame burns brighter than ever before. With the mixture of our different musical preferences and the personalities involved, I will dare to say we have created a BEAST, the most detailed work to date out of our 17 years of existence. I know it's too much of a cliché to brag when you have a done a new album, but to put it short and simple, it's a fist in the face to all the doubters out there. Forward – Onward – March… ENTER THE SUPREME UNKNOWN.”

For the second time in the band's career (i.e. 1996's “Stormblåst”), a one-word album title breaks the tradition of a three-word album title for a new studio release dating back to DIMMU BORGIR's 1994 debut, “For All Tid”.

Guitarist/songwriter Silenoz has this to say on the topic: “We knew there would be some big changes with this album in more than one way and since we've had the three-word-title tradition for many years now, we thought it'd make a lot of sense for us to move on from that. It has served its purpose. We are a band that's all about change and moving forward. An album title consisting of one word goes hand-in-hand with the new material — it describes both the musical and lyrical content in a more imaginary way, not to mention the unity and the everlasting flame which is DIMMU BORGIR. Expect the unexpected!”

When asked about the central figure in the artwork and who/what he's supposed to represent, artist Joachim Luetke responds: “I think that's obvious. Since the whole 'setting' is located in an icy, bleak, winter-y, post-industrial era, we're pretty close to H.P. Lovecraft's nameless elder gods. They're represented by the mask's tentacles. In short: the mask/face personifies dominion of powers far beyond mankind. The nameless gods witnessed the birth of our universe and they'll watch it implode. To them, the age of mankind is but a blink of an eye.”

In early June, DIMMU BORGIR announced its collaboration with Norwegian composer and Berklee College of Music summa cum laude alumnus Gaute Storaas in addition to the 51 members of KORK (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra) and the 38-member Schola Cantorum Choir. To date, over 101 musicians have contributed to the making of the new CD.

Composer Gaute Storaas has said of DIMMU BORGIR: “Their music is epic, thematic and symphonic already from the creation; they are clearly having an orchestral approach to composing.”

Luetke's artwork and layout art also graced two other DIMMU BORGIR albums: 2003's “Death Cult Armageddon”, which has sold 130,000 copies in the U.S. (according to Nielsen SoundScan) and debuted at No. 7 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, No. 10 on the Top Independent Albums chart, and No. 170 on The Billboard 200 chart; and 2007's “In Sorte Diaboli”, which has sold over 75,000 copies in the U.S. (according to Nielsen SoundScan) and debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart and at No. 43 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Apple Inc., formerly recognized as Apple Computer, Inc., could be referred to as one from the multinational corporations dependent in America with focus on manufacturing and designing consumer electronics, along with closely-related software program products. Established on 1st of April, 1976 in Cupertino (California) and having incorporated on 3rd of January, 1977, organization was named ‘Apple Computer, Inc.’ till the year 2006, but had the word ‘Computer’ dropped on 9th of January, 2007, in order to have ongoing expansion of company in to market of consumer electronics, apart from conventional focus on the personal computers. Apple can boast of having strength of 20,000 employees all over the world. The time period between 1989 and 1991 was known as the ‘Golden Age’ in the expansion of Apple.

Apple is amongst probably the most renowned words within the personal computer industry. Products manufactured by Apple benefit from an amazing aura and in general are superior to its competition both from the technical and software aspect. The principal reason behind the success of Apple products is that they are innovative, intuitive and different than the rest of the marketplace.

Mac laptops are in a different category from all other laptops, that’s both their strength and their limitation. Their operating system is still at that time far ahead of Vista in terms of ease of use, dependability and versatility. The equipment is controlled 100% by Apple and their quality is really exceptional. On the downside, if you would like use windows or have a lot of windows software program you need to purchase an additional Windows license on top from the regular cost of the laptops. Macs are expensive but they deliver an outstanding client experience and for many, it is well worth the cost.

Apple notebooks are proposed in three lines, they are the MacBook which are the cheapest models designed for everyday users, the MacBook Air for the road warriors and MacBook pro for the heavy users.

The MacBook is equipped with 13.3 -inch TFT show. The frequency of its processor is possibly 2.1 or 2.4 GHz based on the model you select. The RAM is possibly 1 GB or 2 GB. The hard drive room goes from 120 GB to 250 GB; there is a DVD burner, constructed in camera, wifi, Bluetooth and all the necessary connections. The cost goes from $1,099 to $1,499. For a Mac that’s as cheap as it gets. If you are used to Windows laptop pricing, that might seem like a great deal of money, but you are purchasing a MAC, that means best product, best software at a best cost. Just suggest to a Mac user to switch to windows laptops and you will understand why Apple can charge premium pricing, Mac does not have clients per say, they have raving fans.

The MacBook Air: like the MacBook, comes with a13.3 -inch TFT display. It has 1.6 GB processor and 2 GB of RAM. The hard drive includes a capacity of 80 GB, there’s a DVD burner, built in camera, wifi, Bluetooth along with a few peripheral connections. Why buy the MacBook Air? First, ultra portability; at 3 pounds along with a maximum thickness of 0.76 inch, this really is currently the thinnest/lightest laptop computer with a 13.3 display screen. Second, let’s face it, it is about style and status. This laptop computer is not very fast, has limited space and peripherals, but if you’re a light user (i.e. email, web surfing…) who wants to make statement about style, look no further, this is your laptop computer.

The MacBook Pro: This laptop may be the work horse within the Mac family; it includes a 15.4 or 17 -inch TFT show. The frequency of its processor is possibly 2.4, 2.5 or 2.6 GHz depending on the model you choose. The RAM is possibly 2 GB or 4 GB. The hard drive room goes from200 GB to 250 GB; there is a DVD burner, constructed in camera, wifi, Bluetooth and all of the required connections. The cost goes from $1,999 to $2,799.

Not much goes right in Toshiba's laptop lab

By David Gianatasio on Thu Jul 15 2010

Y&R really works it for Toshiba laptops, trying hard to wring some humor out of a strained lab-test premise. The equipment looks like leftovers from Lost in Space, which is cool. The host resembles the sidekick from Home Improvement, which isn't. In this clip, a nerdy assistant named Gary gets "de-resolutionized in the 8-Bitonator 2000," a contraption that looks like a spacepod/public toilet. The dude emerges all wacky-pixilated, like he's made of Legos. The same fate can befall those who use actual public toilets, by the way. They made five of these Web clips, which run about two minutes each. That's about six clips too many. See the others at Ads of the World. They should consider using the retro-tech hardware in that lab to reboot and upgrade the whole campaign.
